End of Year Post
2019 has been another big year for myself and my three businesses which are Hostile Entertainment, Turn Up Event and David Dean Events.
I have had an up and down year with my health being diagnosed in late May/early June with Type One Diabetes and seeing lots of medical people for check-ups and tests. I lost a lot of weight. I now weigh around 80 kgs and I was around 105 kgs in July 2018. I lost some of the weight last year from my training but I lost most of the weight in the first five months of this year until I was diagnosed with Diabetes. I lost strength and was weak and tired.
At the time I didn’t know what was wrong with me but I knew something wasn’t right. I have got my strength and fitness back now. I am still training as much as possible in the gym and this has been the best thing for me and this. I have had to change a lot in my life with food and what I drink. I have to now be really careful when I am out at events that I can eat the right food and it can sometimes be hard to find something that won’t affect me. I haven’t drunk Coke since early May this year. I still drink Jack Daniels but now have to have it with Soda Water which I never thought I would ever drink but I feel better from not drinking Coke.
I have to be really careful what I eat and drink as all of this can affect my blood sugar levels which go up and down all the time. I wear a device on my arm called FreeStyle Libre which I can use an app on my I Phone to tell me what my blood sugar levels are by scanning my phone over the sensor on the top of my arm. This is a lot better and easier than having to prick my finger and get blood out of it many times a day which is painful.
I have to inject myself two times a day with insulin which is interesting when I can’t see. I might have to inject myself with insulin more times a day in the future to be confirmed. It has been a big change for me and my family but I am and they are dealing with it well. I haven’t stopped working and have had some great things happen in my businesses in 2019 and have a bigger year planned in 2020. I now have to plan everything around my Diabetes and thinking about it all the time. I thought not being able to see was a big problem but having Type One Diabetes is a lot worse.
I got some new promo photos done in September by Marc Austin-Zande for all three businesses to use online as I have changed a lot with losing the weight. See them below.
In 2019 Hostile Entertainment did sold-out shows for COG, Brian Cadd And Russell Morris and the Rebecca O’Connor As Tina Turner show. Hostile Entertainment also did shows for Glenn Shorrock, Adam Harvey and Judah Kelly, Mental As Anything, Sara Storer, Russell Morris and Kevin Borich in 2019.
We also started helping 8 Ball Aitken in the second half of 2019 with some bookings with shows for him and his band around what he already has. I am also working with Sheryl Turner from Humminbird Entertainment with bookings and other things with Kevin Borich and his band. There are some great releases and a book to come next year from Kevin as well as so many more shows/tours. Kevin is playing solo and with his band at the upcoming Woodford Folk Festival every day.
I have also been working with Sheryl as well on Matt Turner as we are both co-managing him and booking shows for him. There are big plans for this act in 2020 with releases and shows/tours. Keep a lookout for him and go and see him play if you can.
Turn Up Event put on another successful Sunshine Coast Music Industry Conference this year on both Thursday 17 and Friday 18 October 2019 at The Playhouse at Solbar, Maroochydore. We decided to go to two days this year and run an industry breakfast and two masterclasses as well as a showcase gig on the Friday to build this conference.
I would like to thank the Turn Up Crew which is Eloise Gallagher, Andrea Smith and Katey O’Malley-Jones for all working together with myself to make this year’s conference so great for everyone who attended either as a punter or speaker/performer.
We would all like to also thank Melissa and all of the Solbar team for working with us to help to put this event on at such a grate live venue on the Sunshine Coast.
This year we had Australian music legend Michael Chugg from Chugg Entertainment and Chugg Music come and do the keynote speech at this conference which was so great.
We ran a panel on Healthy Wealthy and Wise: How to stay fit, play well and save for the future which was something different and really good to do as everyone in the music industry needs to know how to look after themselves.
We also had Stuart Coupe return for the second year and run a panel on the Thursday night called In Conversation – Road Running – How To Survive In The Fast Lane Of Rock ‘N’ Role where he interviewed production and roady legend Howard Freeman and Sophie Kirov as well as did the Marketing Without Money keynote speech at the Friday morning breakfast and also The Business Of Managing Music master class on Friday afternoon.
I also spoke on The Business Of Managing Music master class along with Stuart Coupe and Howard Freeman interviewed by Andrea Smith. This was such a great master class and it was great to be up there on the stage with these music industry legends.
We had showcase acts Dorah Jacson and Aspy Jones play on the Thursday night at the conference, Mason Hope showcase at the Friday morning breakfast and then Fleur, Matt Turner, Karin Law Duo and Dan Horne showcase on the Friday evening.
All the showcase acts were really great live over both days. This is our sixth year of putting this conference on and it is growing more and more every year. This year was the best so far with the most ticket sales for it. We are already planning the 2020 one and have some surprises in store for you all. Please see some photos below from this year’s conference.
Go over to the Turn Up Event facebook page to see more photos, videos and posts from the two days.
I have been working on transferring to David Dean Events to work under this year with wanting to work on a lot more events and one-off gigs for bigger artists/bands.
I have had a new website where everything will sit under built for me by Marc Austin-Zande and I have done some more events under this brand. I did one more A Night Of Music And Conversation event with Matt Collins in May at The Playhouse at Solbar, Maroochydore. I am working on some different events for 2020 which I will do under this new business/brand which are different to what I have done in the past. I am working with Tony Moran and others to organise an event for the National Roady4Roadies Event on Sunday 5 April 2020 at The Alex Heads Surf Club which will include a 5Km walk and a live gig to raise money for Crew Care and Support Act which I am involved with.
