Brisbane’s Progressive Metal Powerhouse Aeon Nexus Return with Macabre New Final Girl EP
Brisbane progressive metalcore juggernaut Aeon Nexus return in full force
with their deliciously macabre new three-track EP, Final Girl.
The campaign begins with the release of the title track on 21 August 2026, followed by the full EP on 4 September 2026.
The EP marks the quartet’s first release featuring guitarist Jordan Gray and drummer Jesse Nikolic, who joined the band in 2025.
A New Chapter for Aeon Nexus
In the 12 months since Aeon Nexus reformed their lineup, the band have delivered a string of noteworthy live performances. These include local support slots for national and international tours by FATE GEAR from Japan, Be’lakor, Persefone from Andorra and Lord of the Lost.
The band also went on to headline a stage at the Shredfest metal festival in May 2026.
Aeon Nexus had already developed a strong reputation for their captivating yet brutal live performances and the impact of their earlier releases. Following the release of their debut EP, Positive Disintegration, in 2024, the band were selected by Wall of Sound as the featured artist for that week’s Aussie Heavyweights and Hitmakers
playlist.
Their Sony Catchlight Film Festival award-nominated music video for The Choice also amassed 25,000 views within a fortnight of release.
Inside the Final Girl EP
Each of the EP’s three tracks represents a different element of Aeon Nexus’ complex and multifaceted approach to progressive metalcore.
Taking influence from genre heavyweights including Periphery, VEXED,
ERRA and the technical brutality of Archspire, the release showcases the versatility of the band’s new lineup and evolving sound.
Final Girl
The five-and-a-half-minute title track interweaves cascading 1980s synths with soaring soprano vocals, polyrhythmic grooves and crushing slam breakdowns, creating a theatrical and visceral soundscape.
Aurora
Aurora offers a darkly sweet contrast, moving between moments of frenzy and impassioned, anthemic choruses.
Hydra
Closing the EP, Hydra combines nu-metal flavours with the band’s signature groovy riffs for a defiant final statement.
Production
Aeon Nexus returned to longtime production collaborator Chris Themelco of Monolith Studios Melbourne for the mixing and mastering of the three-track release.
Drum tracking and engineering were completed at Pulpitation Studios in Brisbane, while the track artwork was created by Alex Wilton.
A Blood-Soaked Tribute to Slasher Cinema
Aeon Nexus also reunited with videographer Seabass Snaps to bring the ambitious vision behind Final Girl to the screen.
Filmed at horror maze and alternative arts space EvilCorp Haunted Attractions Australia, the music video is a gruesomely entertaining spectacle that pays tongue-in-cheek tribute to 1980s slasher films while delivering a bold feminist statement.
The video follows the abduction of an “innocent” bride and her two companions by a sadistic serial killer. The trio desperately attempt to escape through the killer’s halls of horrors, with the bride eventually emerging as the sole survivor.
Through its conclusion, the video critically examines the classic “final girl” trope and raises unsettling questions about the fetishisation of female pain and victimisation throughout horror and true-crime media.
